Volunteers will be provided 3 meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner). Typical meals include Ugali (maize flour African Cake), Chapatti, Chai (Tea), Bread and rice or spaghetti with vegetables. Volunteers can buy large bottles of water and snacks in Nairobi on their way from the airport and in Ngong during free time.
Volunteers are provided with the following;
- Bed and Mattress
- Bowl for washing and bathing
- Padlock for locking your room
Volunteers should note that the living conditions are basic with no running water or electricity. Toilet facilities are basic, a shack with a hole in the ground, you can buy a bucket to use in your room at night. Some of the homes have got solar panels installed for electricity.
Volunteers are advised to bring the following: Sleeping Bag, Pillow, Mosquito Net, Torch, Sun Cream, Sunglasses & Hat, Warm clothing for the evenings, suitable footwear such as walking boots and light footwear, light clothing for daytime.
During rainy seasons (March-May and September – December) we recommend that volunteers bring Wellingtons and waterproof clothing.
In the local town (Ngong) we have a number of stores that you can purchase toiletries including soap, shampoo & conditioner, toilet tissue, sun cream, moisturiser. Also you can buy a mosquito nets, jugs, bowls etc. There are also pharmacies where you can purchase basic medicines such as paracetamol, medicines for colds and antihistamine tablets or cream. You can also purchase some fruit, water, products, eat a meal in town, top up your phones etc.
